Musta been really hard to pick a RATM song! My personal favorite is Freedom, but I was a teenage bass player at the time it came out and god damn was that track fun as hell to play.

Mark knopfler. Dire straits came up when punk was extremely big and bands like led zep and deep purple already got the name "dinosaur rock". He made guitar music interesting and fresh again, in a time where it was a whole lot harder than in the 60's/70's. He definitely belongs on the list of the names mentioned (clapton, hendrix, page, beck)

Ok Sweet Home Alabama is a great song but the greatest rock anthem of all time is Freebird. Shame you can't include Guns-N-Roses but Welcome to the Jungle is in the top 20 as well.

Boston was an incubator of great new music and outlets on the fm dial to hear it.. but the city just lost its last FM station (WAAF) that played new release and featured local bands. There are 4 remaining classic rock stations that play the same overlapping playlists of worn out songs over and over.

January 1st 1970 to December 31st 1973 are my favorite 4 consecutive years of music. The musicians who were still alive and vital, the groups that were still hungry and climbing, it was a time before heroin and cocaine took over the industry.

I really enjoy the three of you sharing stories. I got my first Ray Charles album at 11, listened to Motown, was a Dylan fan from Freewheeling on, became a huge Beatles fan, loved Stax, Cream, the Airplane, then became a CSN and sometimes Y fan, Allman Bros and became a Deadhead. First songs I ever played were My Girl and For What it's Worth. I'd love to hear you talk about The Band, The Allman Brothers and Stephen Stills. They have always been big influences on me. I love your stuff.

AS every Generation ends up REBELING against the Previous, so every new trend or genre in music does likewise! In fact, even the 50's,60's,70's etc Pop Music was quite unlike the much slower music of the 30's & 40's: the Benny Goodwin-George Gershwin slow dancing Style! At times, the Rebellion produces good to excellent results, with the effect of the much older music genre getting re-accepted in appropriate occasion & context, But sometimes the Rebel Trend destroys what was good in the prior Phase of musical expression, to bring a sort of decadent or deficient state....But then, the next Baby Boomers of the 21st century will end up rebelling against EVEN That, and produce their very own unique Style for that future time, yet even then they will go back to re-appreciate what musical greatness went way before them! SUCH is genuine progress in music genre. The perfect example is Classical Music of the great Masters: Mozart, Beethoven, Albinoni, Devorack, Tchaokofsky,et al. The same with Country Music, Folk Music, etc. The true musician, or player of music, or listener will always APPRECIATE the entire Heritage of Great Music no matter what His or Her or Their PREFERANCE FOR. Like the true Gardener, the true Artist & Art lover, the true musician doesn't reject the past absolutely....

Interesting discussion. I personally would disagree with the dictionary definition of the term virtuoso as "extraordinarily skilled in technique". The fundamental purpose of music (or any art) is the expression of meaning such that it can and does alter consciousness in the listener (or viewer), creating a genuine, whole experience only accessible through that art. Comparing virtuoso technique to virtuoso expressiveness is the same as comparing clean, precise, incredibly fast playing to the purposeful creation of whole worlds that people like Gilmour can achieve with a fraction of the notes and a far lesser degree of technical gymnastics. Insanely accomplished technique is impressive, but quickly becomes boring to listen to because it lacks meaningful content that resonates in the listener's experience (unless they're an aspiring shredder too, and even then it's more of a lesson in technique than an entirely new experience or intensely personal communication between the artist and his audience). That's why most people would take the artist over the technician any day. Defining virtuosity in terms of the artist's ability to improvise as a way to communicate fluidly and in real time is far more worthy of the term (imho) than merely the ability to pull off seemingly impossible technical tricks that a machine designed for that purpose could accomplish just as well.

I recently started to listen to Britney Spears "3" but I couldn't finish it. The Autotune and compression offended me to the point that I just had to stop the playback, leve a scathing comment and find something else to listen to. Blocking is INNANE!!! Young people get a taste of the old music and they go nuts because they've never heard real artists perform before. And that introduces a whole new generation to the best music and hopefully inspires them to do likewise. I really hope that people will finally say ENOUGH!" and stop paying to listen to mass-produced synthisized crap so that real artists and musicians can have a hope of earning a living at it again.
