The greatest video on how to sail on ALnets. Subscribed! Thank you sir!! I've been sailing a dozen or so times with a mad captain that's not the best at explaining things. I just do what I'm told and live in constant fear, but he mixes good rum & coke drinks for me. I don't know why he puts me up at foredeck I just end up grenading that area.

@Nick P Blimey mate, you hit the nail on the head. I taught m'self, there's no bloody way I'd let a pack of rich turds from a royal yacht club look down their nose at my grimy bote. A Chesterfield in the cockpit, a bonny lass on each knee, and who gives a damn if I'm sailing slightly imperfectly. Boating, whiskey, women, and cigars in that order are the spice of life. Cheerio!

I live in the Great Lakes region of the USA and it’s just a fun/slang term to mean “mess up”. Kind of how like people say “my kids destroy the house after I clean it”. The kids didn’t literally destroy anything but just made a mess of things.

Dave Vito, I agree nothing like looking death in the face, you are about to drown, get eaten by sea creatures, have no idea what you are doing and some crazed lunatic with a masters in suicide is screaming at you for not getting a rope correct. Any wonder why I just want to potter around on the bay, put a chesterfield couch in the cockpit, piss fart around like Jack Aubrey and not join a club full of these masochists. If I want to go fast and win guess what my big Aussie V8 is doing. This is a beautiful instructional video. No blood pressure issues likely. 🇦🇺

Somebody got a pen and a piece of paper I can borrow, I gotta write something down ha ha. Actually all kidding aside I always wondered about sailing and how a sail boat could sail in anything but the wind in your back. This was very informative, not over technical and with some study these sailing terms and basic knowledge could have anyone sailing in no time. Good job 👍

I really enjoy this video, sailing is not that complicated, would you say? What kind of boat is that, it seems like its small enough to start learning to sail on.
Josh Post
Josh Post 13 ditë më parë
Thanks Rick. Boat is a Capri 25. I think it's a perfect sized boat to learn on. You might even want to try a smaller boat, like 18 to 20 ft, at first, especially if planning to sail alone. But you can soon advance to something like 25 ft boat after just 2 or 3 outings.

@Josh Post I've passed my boating license now during the quarantine. I know how to determine a direction on the map. How do you apply this direction when on the boat using only a compass and no electronic devices? Do you have a video about that?
Josh Post
Josh Post 13 ditë më parë
Hey Ervin, the good thing about sailing is that nearly anything is possible. I assume there are people who have gone solo on boats over 50 ft, 60 ft, and over. I personally had a 38 ft sailboat that I sailed solo and it was doable, but I wouldn't want to go much larger than that if alone. Thanks for the comment.

Josh, I see you had to run up front to retrieve the sailtie before running up the headsail. There is a neat trick that will let you do all that from the safety of the cockpit. What you do is roll up your headsail from the clew towards the headstay and sling the halyard underneath. Make sure the clew is in front of he halyard. now tension the halyard and it will lift up and hold the entire headsail off the deck. Now when you want to raise it you can just pull on the jibsheet, undoing your bundle and letting the sail fall onto the deck and then raise it without ever going forward. Sorry that I can't provide you with a video but try it and with a little practice you'll get it. Keep up the good work.

Hey Josh thanks for this. 2020 and other things had me buying a 28ft boat, taking two RYA courses to get the hang of it and now upgrading a solid boat ( but dated) for next year sailing in Solway Firth, Scotland and hopefully beyond. This was the first sailing video I watched and I use it frequently so I don't forget what was on the course. I have a long way to go but you did a great job of this as far as I am concerned and it was appreciated. Have a good Christmas

Why didn't you sail back to the dock? (Total noob here) Was it impossible to use the direction of the wind that day to go back to the dock?
Josh Post
Josh Post Muaj më parë
Anything is possible. When I first learned to sail in an 18 ft boat, there wasn't an engine, so I sailed back to the dock each time. It's just a bit more difficult and can take a lot longer if wind is not cooperating. Plus, where my dock is (in this video), it's in a very narrow cove and would be quite difficult to tack if need be to get back. Nonetheless, it's good to challenge yourself a bit and sail back to the dock once in awhile. Thanks for watching!

Very well done -- I must agree with so many comments already to that effect. As much as I've read of old sailing tales, I've never had (or arranged) the opportunity to sail, but I always thought I should know at least the basics, in case it ever arises. So there's the unabashed admission of - not even yet a NOOB - which may explain why this may be a stupid question: You point out the danger of your going forward when alone, as there's nobody manning the till, but it SEEMS so obvious: why don't you simply tie the tiller in place before you venture forth - so at least nothing will make any fast, unexpected, jolting moves?

i love this video, i used to own an amazing little boat called Lucy, named her after my wife, i lost her to cancer. When am out with her, thats about one of the only things that soaths me, and this terrible year happened, so i had to sell it. coming to watch this video has been my only comfort and vice, lol. 2020 really has no comparison, and am glad its coming to an end. I also lost my job and life looked so miserable to me. i was loosing hope and faith but i kept on looking up to God because i know he never fails. well, it wasnt all bad, today i have an amazing company and Three bigger boats and they are named after my wife, my beautiful daughter and a dear friend or liberator, Alexis, depending on how you look at it, and i will forever be grateful to God and my friend Alexis Susan Welsh, this woman made me what i am today financially . She introduced me to a bitcoin Blockchain group and i have never for once regreted working with them. if you wish to reach out to her here is her email support@alexissusanwelsh. com, i tell everyone about her and how she really changed my life and i am very grateful to God for bringing her into my life. I pray for everyone out there, may the water be kind to you.
